LED, which stands for Light Emitting Diode,
means light emitting diode. This is a semiconductor
element used for transmissing and receiving
the electronic signals by converting it into
infrared rays or light, taking advantage of
using the characteristics of chemical compounds
semiconductor
LED is a Light Emitting element which can operate
on low tensions. There are many advantages :
Low power-consumption, quick response and solid
structure. Also, it can be made into micro-sized
unit so that it can be applicable in indications. Many
users tend to use this as exterior indicator
in accordance with the high luminance of LED.
LED is divided into 2 parts; IRED(Infrared Emitting
Diode) and VLED(Visible Light Emitting Diode).
These LEDs can control other wave lengths of
the light according to the componenets and kinds
of semiconductors, so a new market can be formed
from each different wave lengths of the light.
In the past, LEDs were only made of Green, Yellow
and Red, but as manufacturing skills going developing,
the structure of the element has improved, enabling
the application in automobiles, message indicators,
traffic indicators to be detailed. But the development
of Blue LED among the three primary colors(Green,
Red and Blue) was confronted with technological
limitation. For this, a combination of Full
Color was impossible to manufacture at that
time. However, a Japanese Chemical company
called Nichia succeeded developing and producing
High Luminance blue LEDs in the 1990s. This
enable many developers to produce a natural
colors for indicators. That is, if the blue
LED is combined with the red and green LEDs,
it means that it can produce all kinds of
colors. Long-life, High Luminance and High
visible displays, traffic indicators and electric
lights were available from that time.
Also, a combination of the three primary
colors(Green, Red and Blue) made the production
of White source of light possible. With these
combinations, a variable colors can be made
so a new illuminating equipment field is expected
to spread out pretty soon. Furthermore, the
success of producing White LED using only
the high luminance of blue LED raised possibilities
of using high luminance LEDs as street lightings.
From now on, the high luminance LEDs will
expand its field into normal lightings, gaining
enormous reputations as an innovative technology.(like
the substitution of electronic tube or CRT
TV to trangister or LCD, PDP TV) These trends
will naturally lead to low electric consumption,
reduction on the price of replacement and
pollution, undoubtedly making it environment-friendly.
